ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The 30th Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) kicked off on Friday in Bosnia and Herzegovina, featuring the world premiere of "My Late Summer", a film by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanović.

This film is a joint production involving Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Slovenia, and Serbia.

The opening ceremony, held at the National Theater, saw major celebrities from the world of cinema gracing the red carpet.

Over the course of the festival, which runs until August 23, audiences worldwide will have the opportunity to watch more than 250 films from across the globe.

The SFF continues to be a platform that not only celebrates cinema but also reflects the city’s alternative scene, known for using music and art to inspire change and attract global attention.

This year, 57 films will vie for the prestigious "Heart of Sarajevo" award. Hollywood actress Meg Ryan, who will also lead a masterclass for filmmakers, is set to receive this year's honorary "Heart of Sarajevo" award.

In addition to Meg Ryan, the festival will host other notable artists such as Cord Jefferson, Alexander Payne, Elia Suleiman, and John Turturro, who will also conduct masterclasses during the event. These sessions will offer a unique opportunity for the audience to gain insights into the careers of these acclaimed filmmakers.

The SFF is more than just a cinematic celebration; it is also expected to make a significant contribution to the local economy, drawing thousands of attendees from the region and around the world. The festival will conclude with an award ceremony on August 23.

Since its inception 30 years ago, the Sarajevo Film Festival has been dedicated to erasing the scars of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and restoring the city as a hub of culture and art.

The festival's most prestigious accolade, the "Heart of Sarajevo" Honorary Award, has previously been bestowed upon cinematic legends such as Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Oliver Stone, and many others.

This year’s festival also includes a rich selection of films in its Open Air Programme, featuring works like Cord Jefferson's American Fiction, the Coen Brothers’ Barton Fink, and Danis Tanović’s latest film My Late Summer.

Attendees can expect a diverse array of genres and styles, reflecting the dynamic nature of contemporary global cinema.

As the festival continues to thrive, it remains a powerful symbol of Sarajevo’s resilience and its commitment to the arts, making it a beacon for filmmakers and cinema lovers worldwide.
