ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A director of a private company has been sentenced to imprisonment in absentia for submitting fake guarantee letters and receiving advances of 20 billion dinars in Nineveh province, the Federal Prosecutor's Office announced on Saturday.

The Mosul Criminal Court, under the Nineveh Court of Appeal, handed down the sentence to Abdul Nasser Hamid Hazim Hamid for fraudulently securing a 20 billion dinar advance to construct a 600-bed university teaching hospital, according to a statement from the Iraqi Commission of Integrity.

The company managed by the convict had signed a contract with another company and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 2014 to build the hospital.

The legal representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Mosul University subsequently filed a complaint and sought compensation from the accused company.

Meanwhile, the Nineveh Health Office claimed no knowledge of the contract, according to the prosecutor's office.

During the court proceedings, the administrative investigation submitted by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research was reviewed, leading to legal actions aimed at recovering the guarantee amounts.

The court also reviewed the cases of four other accused individuals, ultimately charging them. The main accused was detained under Article 456/1 of the Iraqi Penal Code.
